Shuho Yamakawa - Bijin Prints
Shuho Yamakawa, recognized for approximately two dozen woodblock prints featuring 'bijin' or beautiful women, passed away at the age of 46 amidst the turmoil of World War II in the Pacific.
Shuho Yamakawa: Biography
Shuho Yamakawa was born in 1898 in Kyoto and sadly departed in 1944. Under the tutelage of Kiyokata Kaburagi, Yamakawa delved into the realms of painting and printmaking. His fellow students included notable artists such as Hasui Kawase, Ito Shinsui, and Torii Kotondo.
Bijin-ga
Following in the footsteps of his friends Ito Shinsui and Torii Kotondo, Shuho Yamakawa specialized in 'bijin-ga' or images of beautiful women. His artistic style, while slightly more traditional compared to his peers, produced woodblock prints, some of which were published by the renowned shin hanga publisher Watanabe Shozaburo.
It's regrettable that Shuho Yamakawa's life was cut short, as he did not have the opportunity to witness the post-war commercial resurgence in shin hanga prints that unfolded around 1950.
Beyond his contributions to woodblock prints, Yamakawa also engaged in illustration and painting. In his early years, he created kuchi-e lithographs. Additionally, he produced a notable series of woodblock prints featuring traditional Japanese dancers in the late 1930s.
