Iam immensely honoured to have been chosen to serve as the new president of the British Chambers of Commerce for the next two years.

Having been actively involved in various roles for the North East Chamber of Commerce for nearly a decade, I have seen at close quarters what a phenomenal job they do, both on the ground to support their members and also lobbying on their behalf to improve business conditions.

I am delighted I will be able to work at a national level to deliver a positive impact over how we all do business in the future. I look forward to working with thousands of companies across the UK in what is by far and away the most representative of business membership organisations.

Over the past decade I have witnessed the BCC grow its strength of voice so that it is now at the very heart of any conversations with Whitehall and Westminster regarding business policy at a national level. The volume of members, the eclectic mix of sectors and sizes and the geographical spread gives the BCC a mandate to speak passionately on behalf of the business community and provides a compelling reason for politicians and civil servants to listen.

I am keen to see that the BCC is extremely business-like and professional in everything that we do, as we must lead by example. I am also keen to build on the work of my predecessor, the outgoing BCC president Neville Reyner, in working tirelessly to make a real difference.

Never in recent history has the business voice been more important.

The economy, both here and in Europe, is still struggling to shake off the recession, and the latest GDP figures published last week illustrate graphically how turbulent growth is. However, the UK Government's commitment to reduce public spending and its decision to change local governance to increase the involvement of the business community has put the emphasis firmly with the private sector to create the growth we so clearly need.

I look forward to meeting many businesses over the coming months, and I believe we have much brighter times ahead.
