Early Life and Education

Kristalina Georgieva was born on August 13, 1953, in Sofia, Bulgaria. Her father was a grandson of a prominent revolutionary, and her mother came from the town of Lyubimets. Georgieva graduated from the "St. Sedmochislenitsi" Secondary School in Sofia.

She pursued higher education at the Karl Marx Institute of Political Economy and Sociology (now the University of National and World Economy in Sofia), graduating in 1976 with a degree in Political Economy and Sociology. In 1986, she earned her doctorate in "Environmental Policy and Economic Growth in the US."

Career at the World Bank

Georgieva joined the World Bank in 1993. From 2000 to 2004, she served as the Director for Sustainable Development. From 2004 to 2007, she led the Russian Federation country team. In March 2008, she became the World Bank's Vice President for Sustainable Development.

Nomination as Commissioner to the European Commission

In 2010, the Bulgarian government nominated Georgieva for the post of European Commissioner. She was ultimately appointed as the EU Commissioner for International Cooperation, Humanitarian Aid, and Crisis Response.

Work as Commissioner

As Commissioner, Georgieva coordinated humanitarian assistance after the Haiti earthquake and other crises in Chile, Pakistan, and elsewhere. She prioritized enhancing the EU's crisis response capabilities, establishing the European Voluntary Humanitarian Corps, and revising the EU's Humanitarian Aid Consensus.

Executive Director of the World Bank

After leaving the European Commission in 2016, Georgieva was elected as the Executive Director of the World Bank in 2017.

Candidacy for UN Secretary-General

In 2016, Georgieva was nominated by the Bulgarian government for the position of Secretary-General of the United Nations. However, she was not elected.

Director of the IMF

On September 25, 2019, Georgieva was elected as the Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), succeeding Christine Lagarde. She assumed office on October 1, 2019.
