Biography of Jon Cryer
Jonathan Niven "Jon" Cryer, born on April 16, 1965, is an American actor, screenwriter, and film producer. He is the son of actress and singer Gretchen Cryer. Cryer made his film debut in the lead role in the romantic comedy "No Small Affair" in 1984. However, he gained much more popularity with his leading role in the film "Pretty in Pink," written by John Hughes. In 1998, he completed the screenplay and produced the independent film "Went to Coney Island on a Mission from God... Be Back by Five," which was well-received by both audiences and critics.
While Cryer received recognition for his roles in these films, he struggled on television for a long time. The shows he was involved in, such as "The Famous Teddy Z," "Partners," and "The Trouble with Normal," did not last very long. In 2003, he was cast as Alan Harper in the hit comedy series "Two and a Half Men" on CBS, alongside Charlie Sheen. This role earned Cryer a Primetime Emmy Award in 2009. It is worth noting that he had been nominated three times for an Emmy as an "Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series" for his involvement in this project.
Cryer was born into a family of performers. His mother, Gretchen Cryer, is a singer, songwriter, playwright, and actress, while his father, Donald David Cryer, is an actor, singer, and producer. He has two sisters, Robin and Shelly. At the age of twelve, Cryer had already decided that he wanted to become an actor. When his mother heard about it, she jokingly suggested that he consider becoming a plumber as a backup plan. As a teenager, Cryer studied at Stagedoor Manor Performing Arts Training Center and graduated from Bronx High School of Science in 1983.
At the age of nineteen, Cryer made his on-screen debut in the romantic comedy "No Small Affair," where he played the lead role of Charles Cummings. He then appeared in a series of small roles in both film and television, followed by a breakthrough role as Phil "Duckie" Dale in John Hughes' film "Pretty in Pink." In an interview with the Daily News, Cryer's mother recalled receiving phone calls from teenage girls from all over the country after the release of the film. These calls mainly consisted of hysterical giggling on the answering machine. Undoubtedly, Cryer became much more well-known after "Pretty in Pink."
In 1987, he portrayed Lenny Luthor in the film "Superman IV: The Quest for Peace." In 1989, Cryer landed the lead role in the comedy television series "The Famous Teddy Z." However, critics deemed his performance weak, and the show was canceled after its first season. A year later, Cryer starred alongside Charlie Sheen in Jim Abrahams' comedy film "Hot Shots!," which was not particularly successful. According to Cryer's interview on the talk show "Anytime with Bob Kushell" in 2009, he auditioned for a role in "St. Elmo's Fire," but unfortunately, he was not cast. In 1993, he also auditioned for the role of Chandler Bing in the sitcom "Friends." Although he sent his video auditions to the studio, they arrived after the project's decision had already been made. In 1995, Cryer secured a role in the series "Partners," which, again, got canceled after its first season. The actor was feeling discouraged until he found success with his role in the independent film "Went to Coney Island on a Mission from God... Be Back by Five."
